A theory of democracy defined as a form of public reasoning is today no longer self-evident. However, as Uwe Volkmann demonstrates in this volume, it continues to underlie both normative intuitions and the interpretation of Germany's Basic Law as a standard that makes it possible to recognize and name undesirable developments for what they are.
